Short Story - 1226 Words

It was a bright, sunny day. The trees of the orchard were all that could be seen. Every few minutes, an apple fell from a tree, making a smacking noise against the ground. The smell of rotting apples, long forgotten in the deep grass, was dominating to the nose. A small man walked into the orchard wearily, slowly reached up and plucked an apple from the branches from the nearest tree. He sat against the trunk of a tree and indulgently bit into the apple, enjoying the sweet taste of the fruit. Another man, younger, but bigger than the first, walked into the orchard, grabbing an apple on his way, and sat next to the first man. â€Å"How do you do it, Charlie?† The second man asked the first. Out of the corner of his eye, Charlie noticed a cow†¦show more content†¦He stood with his hands on his hips and his chest puffed out, which looked strange because he was so short â€Å"It’s dinner time boys. After the long day of work you guys had, you deserve it,† The man said. â€Å"Alright Mr. Hammond, we’ll be right in.† Charlie said, but as Mr. Hammond began to leave, Charlie said something else, â€Å"Mr. Hammond, I’ve been meaning to ask you something.† â€Å"What?† â€Å"Can I have one of your horses? You don’t have to pay me for the next month.† Mr. Hammond burst out laughing. While he was doubled over, he looked up for a second, and realized that Charlie wasn’t laughing. â€Å"Oh, you’re serious? Well, I don’t know†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"What if I go to the fair tomorrow, and do really well running our section?† â€Å"Well, maybe.† Mr. Hammond replied reluctantly. After that, they all went into the massive farmhouse to eat. Charlie ate like a hog, but he didn’t taste one bit of his food. He then went to his quarters and went to bed. He slept like a mexican jumping bean; he tossed and turned with nervousness. He eventually did fall into fretful sleep, in which he dreamed of all the horses on the farm, dead. After he had finished burying the horses, his alarm clock yelled in his ear, â€Å"BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!!† Then he was up, he got dressed and went to the fair with all of the animals. It was a bright, beautiful day.
